Project:
Kandewattha House

Location:
Sri Lanka

Kandewattha house sits on a gently sloping site in the South of Sri Lanka. Following the natural contours of the land, living spaces were separated into site-related elements and placed delicately within the landscape.

Taking inspiration from a low wall to prevent erosion on site, the house design evolved by repeating the natural stone base to serve as seat of the house and also elevating it to maximize the use of site levels and avoid too much cutting of the site. Views are regulated by orienting the openings towards both sea and Mahwella beach whilst maintaining privacy with the nearby neighbor building. A swimming pool is located in the "saddle" or the lowest point of the site towards the ocean.

The owners also commissioned a "tree-house", a simple elevated structure with completely operable walls, orientated to provide 360-degree views around the site and beyond.
